San Diego, California, 25 June 2003 - VIA Telecom, Inc., a leading innovator and developer of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) chipsets, and QUALCOMM Incorporated, pioneer and world leader of CDMA digital wireless technology, today announced the assignment to VIA Telecom of LSI Logic Corporation's cdmaOne™ and CDMA2000 1X Application Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs) license under QUALCOMM's patented CDMA technology. The assignment of the royalty-bearing license agreement enables VIA Telecom to develop, manufacture and sell cdmaOne and CDMA2000 1X ASICs to QUALCOMM's subscriber equipment licensees for digital cellular, personal communications services and wireless local loop applications around the world.
"This agreement allows us to provide our wireless customers with a baseband processor solution for use in a wide variety of CDMA2000 devices offering voice, data and GPS-enabled applications, which will help deliver time-to-market and product differentiation advantages keyed by the CDMA standard," said Ker Zhang, CEO of VIA Telecom, Inc. "VIA Telecom is excited to expand its product offering to include ASIC solutions for the global CDMA2000 market, and to continue working on accelerating the growth of CDMA2000 worldwide."
Specializing in the development of advanced CDMA-based integrated circuits for next generation wireless mobile voice and data applications, VIA Telecom, Inc. was created in April 2002 when VIA Technologies, Inc. acquired the CDMA Wireless Division of LSI Logic, which entered into a licensee agreement with QUALCOMM in 1997. The LSI Logic sale completion has now been finalized. "
"Completing the sale with LSI Logic and sealing this agreement with QUALCOMM sets VIA Telecom on a firm footing to expand the CDMA market and will bring the benefits of 3G telecommunications technology to many more people around the world," said Richard Brown, Associate Vice President of Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc. "VIA Telecom has built up a strong wireless design team that is taking full advantage of the numerous technology synergies with VIA."
