Working together on technology, product and market development to advance the CDMA industry in China

Taipei, Taiwan, Thursday 24th February 2011 – The VIA Group represented by VIA Telecom, Inc, a leading innovator and developer of CDMA chipsets, and China Telecom Corp, the world’s largest wireline telecommunications and broadband service provider and leading CDMA operator, today formally renewed their strategic cooperation agreement.

This agreement promotes further collaboration in the fields of CDMA technology, product and market development for greater all-round cooperation, continuity and development of the bilateral strategic partnership, thereby jointly promoting the advancement of China's CDMA industry.

Wang Xiaochu, Chairman and CEO of China Telecom, and Cher Wang, Chairman of the VIA Group, attended the ceremony and oversaw the signing of the strategic cooperation agreement by Ma Daojie, General Manager of Tianyi Telecom, China Telecom’s mobile device arm, and VIA Telecom CEO Ker Zhang. Also attending the ceremony were senior executives from both firms.

Since the signing of the original strategic cooperation agreement in May 2009, China Telecom and the VIA Group have collaborated extensively and invested considerable resources on CDMA mobile product design, manufacture and sales, enabling the introduction of a number of competitive advantages for CDMA silicon and phone solutions in China. The cooperation has enabled industry-wide price reductions for CDMA chips and end-products, and has enabled the launch of timely Tianyi 3G solutions, in line with China Telecom’s strategic development plan. With the strong support of China Telecom, VIA Telecom’s CDMA chip market share in China has reached up to 30%.

In view of the achievements from this bilateral cooperation on CDMA market development in China over the past two years, the two parties agreed to enhance the depth and breadth of their cooperation to promote the greater prosperity of the whole industry, develop a rich CDMA product line, and drive market competitiveness through the renewal and strengthening of their strategic cooperation agreement.

Today’s signing of the strategic cooperation agreement will ensure the closer cooperation of both parties in promoting the CDMA industry.
